The Discovery Flight Explained
Every professional pilot’s journey begins with a single lesson in a small training aircraft. It’s called a Discovery Flight! This flight is one of a pilot’s most fun, exciting, and memorable flights! This marks the beginning of an aviation career, whether it is a career as a general aviation pilot or it blossoms into a full-blown professional endeavor!
It’s during your Discovery Flight that you will first feel what it is like to actually fly and pilot a real airplane. Your instructor will brief you on all of your primary flight control systems, how to use them, all pertinent safety procedures, use of the checklist, and everything as it relates to safely conducting your first flight. Then you will preflight the airplane and take to the skies!
There is simply no greater feeling than pushing the throttle forward, feeling the power of the airplane, and then pulling on the yoke and lifting into the air for the first time and………..YOU’RE FLYING!!
Your instructor will then take you out and show you the basics of what the airplane can do, how to fly it, and you’ll get to see the earth from a completely different perspective. You’ll be up for anywhere from about 40-60 minutes, but when they say it’s time to head back to the airport, you’ll think you’ve only been flying for about 15 minutes! Your instructor will fly the approach and landing, but will teach you what they’re doing, and before you know it, you’ll land back on the runway and be able to log your first hour of flight time!
That’s the Discovery Flight and in simple terms - IT’S AWESOME!
With a Discovery Flight, you are able to get 30 minutes of ground school where you learn the basics of aerodynamics, aircraft control, and pre-flight of the plane. After this, you and an instructor will go up for 45-50 minutes, and you will learn the fundamentals of aircraft control. You will be controlling the aircraft and getting a feel of what it looks like to be a pilot.
